Why didn't Madolyn turn in Sullivan herself?

After receiving the CD, and listening to it, why didn't Madolyn just use it to turn Sullivan into the police herself?

Maybe she wasn't sure about it at the time, but after Sullivan kills Billy, why didn't she?

reply

maybe she would. but dignam finished the job. i think Sullivan would kill Madolyn next, because she was a great threat to him. the guy is a real as.hole, he would do anything to save his a.ss

reply

Well when Sullivan asked her about the baby, he had this look on his face, like he cared about the baby. So I thought he would not want to kill her, cause he would still want the baby to be born.

reply

no, he just wanted to test her reaction. he would definitely kill madolyn. Come on, the guy killed 3 cops (Queenan, Brown, Barrigan) and Costello to save his ass (he would also kill Costigan). As I said, he is a pr.ck, he doesn't care about the baby or the girl.

reply

I think she gave Dignam that envelope she kept for Billy. So she did turn him in. I don't know if she was aware Dignam would kill him.

Hell yes!

i don't think that Dignam needed the envelope to know Sullivan was the rat. The moment Queenan was killed, Dignam started suspecting Sullivan. When Costigan and other 2 troopers were killed, Dignam definitely understood Sullivan was the rat.

reply

Well I guess I meant why didn't Madolyn make an official report to the police at the station and make it official, rather than tell Dignam only.

reply

I dont think that Madolyn told anyone about the envelope

reply

But that's just it. Why not?

reply

She was a pretty smart girl. I'm sure she was sitting on it, thinking about it. I think she was getting around to it, but then Sullivan got jacked before she could do it.

I actually wonder why Billy didn't go to his superiors instead of taking on Sullivan himself. Ellerby would've loved to hear all about it.

reply

I posed a similar question myself on this board a while back and I think the answer was that neither Billy nor Madolyn knew who they could trust in the police department, other than Dignam and the fellow trainee that Billy remembered. Although this makes sense, it wasn't conveyed clearly by the film.

And even then, you have to wonder, why didn't Dignam arrest Sullivan instead of murdering him? Surely Dignam still trusted someone in the police department.

reply

The envelope billy gave her must have the details where those boxes of tapes are and probably request to give that info to dignam. Because he can't trust anyone from unit to hand it over to dignam, he does not know how many or who's corrupt. Mafolyn was not connected to them and she could have located dignam under official capacity being a police shrink.
