James Gandolfini as French?

What do you think, I think it would've suited him well.

reply

I could see it. He'd have to use his normal speaking voice though, instead of the high-pitched one he used on Sopranos.

reply

I think so too. The guy who was cast did a great job though.

reply

I don't think anyone else could have done a better job than Ray Winstone.

reply

He was great, and Gandolfini would have been too. Still pains me to know he's gone.

So many good actors in this one.

reply

Ray Winstone is *beep*

reply

Wow, that's actually an impressive thought, I think that would've been great. But like the guy above me said, Gando was a wop, so it would've been a bit distracting.

Gandolfini has played Irish characters in the past, and he was great in those roles. Particularly, I remember him being really good in 'Money for Nothing', playing a working class Irish-American longshoreman in South Philly.

There was nothing physical about Gandolfini that visually precluded him from being any ethnicity other than Italian. Plenty of Irishmen have dark hair and eyes too, and even olive tones. Take away the Sopranos accent/wardrobe/persona and he could just as easily have been Irish.

And to the OP, yeah. Gandolfini would have been an amazing choice as French. As if they needed to pack more awesome star power into that cast, lol. Still, JG would have made it that much better.

reply

It might have been pretty good, but I'm glad Scorcese mostly stayed away from his usual Italian crew for this very Irish picture. He could have even gone further to emphasize the Irish feel (some of the characters have really puzzling accents), but it's good he didn't hire DeNiro to play Queenan.

See you in hell, candy boys!

reply

Gandolfini would have been fantastic (shame we never saw a Gandolfini/Scorsese collaboration ):) In any case, Ray Winstone is a great actor and his collabs with Scorsese are fun.

... Sebastian Cabot as French?
