If The Departed had not been released in 2006 ...

... what other film should have won the Best Picture Oscar? I personally do not think that The Departed is a good (let alone great) movie, even though I love much of Scorsese's other work. I realize this is a minority opinion, and I am not here to troll those of you that love it. I am just curious what other movie(s) from 2006 people think should have been awarded Best Picture. I do not recall what the other nominees were, but my three favorite, standout great films from that year are The Fountain, Children of Men, and The Wind That Shakes The Barley. It is difficult for me to pick one, but I will go with The Wind That Shakes The Barley, the winner of the Palme d'Or at Cannes that year.

Which 2006 movie is your choice for Best Picture, aside from The Departed?

The other nominees were The Queen, Babel, Letters from Iwo Jima and little miss sunshine. Based on those nominations, I think the Departed deserved to win.

Children of Men, imo, is the best 2006 film by far. That includes The Departed. But it wasn't nominated, so it wouldn't have won best picture. The Academy loves historical dramas, so Letters or The Queen would have won.

I definitely think Babel, Little Miss Sunshine or Children of Men should have won over The Departed. It's well known that they gave Scorsese the Oscar as a 'Sorry we haven't given you one before,' gesture.

Inland Empire. Miami Vice for the runner-up. And Borat still may be the funniest comedy of the 21st Century.

Oh, Borat was that year was it? Then Borat for best picture it is. I'll drink to that!

reply

I agree, Borat whould've won the award for best movie and Sacha Baron Cohen should've won for best actor.

And the gold that Oscar is made out of, think what that would have done for Kazakhstan's economy!
