How did the centurions get so low on the food chain?

This show has been airing on Comet for several months now. The finale literally just aired. I'm watching the final fire fight on "the colony" and it's one of the only time we see the old school centurions.

They were the ones who were in the initial war 50 years before the start of the show. The war ended, they met up with the Final Five and were given their own skinjobs and resurrection tech. The 8 skinjob models are obviously in charge at the time of the events of the show. So, what happened where the centurions became their slaves? The new centurions seem to have always been their slaves, but why were the original models?

In Season 4 Episode 2 'Six of One', the series gives us a clue:
Cavil lobotomized the raiders. The Sixes, Sharons and Leobens responded by removing the chip placed in the centurions to restrict their higher functions. It implies that centurions could think for themselves before and only became mindless slaves, soldiers and laborers after the skinjobs placed that chip.

I know the skinjobs lobotomized the Raiders and newer Centurions. I do remember that.

I mean the old ones that fought the war with the 12 colonies that Adama and Tigh were in. They left for deep space and at some point became subservient to the skinjobs.

Too bad Ronald D Moore is too lazy to film a man in a Centurion costume. The Centurion CGI in the final episode looks pretty bad.
