The character of the chumscrubber

I agree with some of the other posters, the chumscrubber scenes were rather random, but wasn't the point meant to be that in order to survive in his hellish world, the chumscrubber cut his head off. Similarly, the inhabitants of suburbia had "got off their heads" with pills of one sort or another, in a bid to escape the humdrum nature of their existence?

Discuss in no more than 10,000 words.

Also...do we really need any more movies about the dark heart of suburbia and the black, nihilistic reality of American teenagers?

One of the things with The Chumscruber is just showing how much media influences peoples lives..espicially young peoples. But I think the Chumscruber was a good symbol because of it was unique and seemed to geninely care about soceity.
The drug parallel is good (that everyones lost their head in Suburbia) but I think the more striking parallel is the fact that The Chumscruber takes it's head off, and the boy had died by way of hanging himself. (which is a common form of teenaged suicide)

I think that the character of the Chumscrubber cheapened the movie somewhat, it should have been written out. The graphics were fairly below the standard of todays computer games. Awaremeout - I think you've got a good point about the media influences thing, (although it may not be correct for the film to infer that such media is directly responsible for suicides etc) but I think they could have done it in a more indirect way.

I thought the video game bits looked too "good" to be a believable video game, but on the other hand, too cheap and crappy to be proper CGI. It was an odd move from the computer graphics dept. I think an old scrolling 8-bit game would have been more stylish. Anachronistic, yes, but stylish.

I think you're right on with the reason for the character of the chumscrubber...but yes he was random and should have been written out.

And yea, the genre about how suburbia isnt exactly "perfect" and the teenagers living within are subject to dark, disturbing consciences while their parents are all the same "normal" people is a bit overused now a day...especially in the indie circuit. But each one of these types of films has its own unique form about it and I personally really enjoyed the chumscrubber...if not so much the character of the chumscrubber himself.

I am Jack's complete lack of surprise
