SoCal wierdos

Like American Beauty this movie is about the knucklehead set in SoCal who are conmfortable middle class, well educated, obnoxious and absolutely insane. I am surprise this wasn't voted best picture too. What is the message? Who is the hero? It's hard to watch because there is nobody to root for, nobody even likable. Who doesn't open their child's bedroom door to see if he/she is really in there? What kind of kids don't answer when their parents call? Mr. and Mrs Punk and their little spoiled Punks.

It's satire. Surreal.
The adults are self-absorbed and blind to their children, the strongest example being how they didn't open Charlie's door to check if he was actually in there. The kids are the results of their parents.
The entire movie is meant to satirically portray, as you stated, the "conmfortable middle class, well educated, obnoxious and absolutely insane".

I thought the movie made it pretty easy to like the main character Dean.

Don't know how you didn't gain this attraction, not at all that kind of film imo.

But I see what your talking about on your other points.
