Striking Resemblence to Donnie Darko
This movie had me thinking about Donnie Darko the whole time. The dolphin guy was like the child pornographer. Franks eye. I don't know. Like... I can't think of any examples now. But discuss.

As a kid I often watched this made for tv documentary entitled the Something Files..possibly X. Well anyway, to answer your question according to the documentary and although it has never been *officially* proven one could deduct the possibility of extraterrestrial aliens to be true. -Now for the dilemma- If they come here without passports they would be classified as 'illegal aliens'. Something about that doesnt make sense.
What do you guys think we should call them? Discuss.

I can see how it made you think of DD. There are certain similarities. But i see it a little bit different. I can see how both have to deal with the loss of someone they´ve cared about. And still care. They are both not understood by adults. Parents and teacher might think they know what´s inside their heads but they really don´t know.
But I think comparing the mayer/dolphin guy to the child pornographer is a bit harsh. I never saw any signs for that. And Frank´s eye, in this movie the eye was not wounded by Dean (the Donnie in this movie) but by someone else.
And Donnie darko was about having faith in God, timetravel and sacrificing your life for someone you love. I think Chumscrubber was more about the struggle of youth. The struggle they have with parents (Troy and his mother)and expectations (Charlie and his cop dad). The battle some kids have to face everyday at school with fellow students (Dean and Troy). And the never-seems-to-end struggle of adolesence.
I'd rather be hated for who I am. Than loved for who I am not.
I think it was much more like American Beauty.. But Donnie Darko was obviously influenced by American Beauty.. So there you go.
They're all their own different movies, and all great.. So let it stand at that.
yeah Donnie Darko, American Beauty and Magnolia are the films this reminded me of.
shareReminded me of Edward Scissorhands in places too - the way they shot the houses, and especially the part where the trucks turn up and try to get parked in the driveway but there's not enough room - very like the opening of Edward where all the suburban husbands drive to work in a long line of identical cars. The music was even a bit similar at that point which made me think it was an homage.
I think there were a lot of influences in there. The fact it was shot almost like a soap opera made it seem weirder because you don't expect those types of characters to act in such a bizarre way - which is a bit David Lynch as well. Good movie though - and really amazing cast, even for the minor characters. As a few others have mentioned, the scene where Dean explains Troy to his mother at the memorial was perfect, and unexpectedly moving. Would definitely watch it again.
