He got hit on his head from a falling object (paint can?), and it basically had an effect on his brain (changed his personality...he became more artistic and perhaps happier).
I hope this help; I just watched this movie for the first time...missed the first 30-35 minutes though. Fortunately, this movie comes back on Friday, so I will be able to see the first 30-35 minutes that I initially missed. Very interesting movie, I must say!
Thanks
Yes its def interesting and I enjoyed it. I am just trying to understand if there is anything we should take away from his character or his new found enlightenment

He is not going crazy, although from an outside perspective that is certainly what it looks like. I am not even sure the filmmakers were entirely sure what the true explanation is. But my theory is that when he got hit on the head, he began to see things. Not in a Schizophrenic sort of way, but he began to see the world more clearly. But it wasn't until he read Dr. Stiffle's book that what he had been seeing became clear to him.
I don't know that we are necessarily supposed to get anything specific out of his experience, other than the idea that enlightenment is possible and can come in any guise. Does that help? I found his character to be fascinating. But I don't think it is so important to understand what he is going through, just that he is trying to break away from the static world that he inhabits.
