Can't Stand Obtuse Characters in This Film!

O.k., it's suppose to be a satire but it just didn't come off that way. Everyone's stupidity was magnified to the point of just being plain annoying. Why care for any of these characters? Someone please hand me the remote so I can shut this s@#! off.

second that, brother.

I agree. The characters were not likeable in any way. I was hoping that they'd all die by the end.

what was with the dude painting dolphins?

look up the movie on Amazon.com, there's a review there that goes through the whole psychological thing about it.

And the reason they were made to be obtuse characters was because that is what society is like. I watched this with my mother and grandparents, and they all agreed that most of society was like this, too absorbed in their own problems to notice anyone else's.

Of course, there may be some nice places out there, but they're an endangered species...if an area can be an endangered species...

I just want ALL OF EM to be slowly killed.....tortured...........bled dry........and they STILL wouldn't have suffered enough....

The mark of a good character is not whether or not you like them. It is whether or not they make you feel something. If a character makes you feel extremely annoyed, then that in of itself makes the character good. If the characters were bad, you would be indifferent.

Thank you for verifying that truth ELKronos!

As for the dude with the dolphins: That guy was in a manic state of bipolar disorder. I've experienced something very similar. When I get manic, my perception of reality becomes very clear to me, but my behavior appears abnormal to everyone else because I'm extremely serene and excessively happy. It's a euphoria that is very similar to getting high on drugs, only it's not caused by drugs. It could be a chemical imbalance, I suppose. But what I believe triggers this state of euphoria is the synchronizations of several events that point to a "greater plan" that is out of human control. For me, it was comparing different theologies and philosophies while I was seeking a better understanding of my life. For this guy, it the image of a dolphin made up of spilled paint from a bucket that hit him in the head. Then he read a book based on "happy accidents" that he could identify with because of the experience he had that day.

At the end of the movie, that character is seen as an artist and his new philosophy is not about this "bigger plan at work" but more so about being balanced, which is really the key to a fulfilling life.

So are these characters believable in our world? Heck no! The film makers don't want us to buy the "it could happen" factor of this movie. It's just a story about a kid's suffering in a world of ignoramuses who just won't listen to him. Film is a form of art: not everything has to be a still life of something that really exists. If you can't handle the abstractness of a movie, stop watching it and then go bitch about it on imdb because you need to be sure there are others who didn't understand it too. It's okay if you don't understand it, but it kind of makes you a bit obtuse....

Thanks to both of you, Enjoyed Chumscrubber very much. It repeats well.

I don't agree with you stating that so black and white. I was extremely annoyed with Nick Swardson's character in just go with. Not because he was a "good" character but because he was extremely annoying.

Why do people think that movies MUST have likable/identifiable characters in them?
