The problem I had with both movies

Why not just make a documentary about the career of the REAL Huey Long?! Now that's a movie I'd like to see.

Not this turgid, confusing, overwritten material where each character seems like 5 condensed. Where you have stuff like Willie Stark's mistress being the daughter of the FORMER governor AND the first love of Jack Burden AND the niece of the judge who's leading impeachment proceedings AND the sister of an administrator under Willie Stark...and seeming absolutely unconvincing and underdeveloped as any of them.

I'm so glad Fred Willard said the same thing on Ebert and Roeper.

Forget All the King's Men and just make a doc about the real Huey Long.
That would be way more informative and thought-provoking than the story fictionalized.

Ken Burns made a very well-done documentary about Huey Long back in the 80s. It was one of his earlier, shorter (90 min.) documentaries. Definitely worth a look.

I second that. Just saw the Huey Long documentary again last week and it is absolutely excellent. I only wish it had been longer. I love the beginning where Long is giving a speech about the 'differences' between the Republican and Democratic parties. Still true to this very day.

Frank: Just a man.
Harmonica: An ancient race.
