underrated severley

I avoided seeing this for quite a few years due to its very indifferent reviews, even with such an exceptional cast (2 of my personal favs- Winslet and Law).

Saw snippets of it during a vacation in Saigon in those 'getting ready' moments!- utterley enthralled.

Bought the dvd when back in UK- absolutely incredible- what were critics and the public seeing that I wasnt..?

Moody, atmospheric- a great central turn from Sean Penn- Law and Winslet as reliable as ever- and special mentions for superb supporting turns from Patricia Clarkson and Kathy Baker. All involved were great.

One of the best films of the last decade and I am mistified by its less than positive reputation.

I have to agree. I had a copy of this for two years and never watched it due to the generally bad reviews. I've just watched it and would rate it 8/10. Only a slightly tedious pace and rather complex sub plot stops me rating it higher.

Penn and Hopkins are great as usual and the rest range between solid and very good.

Why people have to compare it to the original movie and or the book annoys me. Most people haven't seen/read them so just enjoy this version for what it is.

That is an excellent movie for fans of good acting and sharp dialogue.

Action movie buffs stay away.

Agreed. This movie is destined to find it's audience. A great movie like this one can not remained buried forever, it's just a matter of time.
