The Hospital (spoilers!!!!!!!)

So what was the deal with the hospital at the end? I didn't get that part at all. It must have been something big, because Stark gets killed over it, and so does Adam. Please answer, it's driving me crazy. The dvd I rented didn't have a commentary.

I had the same question.

Stark was trying to build a hospital that everyone could get care at. Adam was going to run that hospital. However, Adam learned that Stark was sleeping with his sister and that is why he killed Stark. He thought Stark sleeping with his sister had something to do with him getting the job and basically went crazy..

That is a possible reason, but the other would have to do with "Adam's weakness". He will do anything for the good even if he doesn't want to. But, he found out that the hospital was about scamming the state out of money for Willie Stark. When Adam realized that it was a fraud, he did the only thing that he thought was "good": kill Willie Stark.

"You paid for parking? For me?"

Apart from sleeping with the sister of the assassin I think that the assassin was told that Sean Penn's character had done some shady dealings with the hospital and somehow that would be blamed on the assassin (who happened to run the hospital).

I believe these were lies passed on by the 'powers that be' who had been controlling things before Sean Penn's character turned up.

Yet there was no fraud. Someone (Jack believes either James Gandolfini or Patricia Clarckson, both with motive to stir Adam to rise up against Willie), called Adam and told him that the hospital was a front for Stark's illegal activities, and that Adam would be the fall guy when/if this was ever discovered. The person also told Adam that his sister was sleeping with Stark, and that she'd do anything to help him, even allowing her brother to be sacrificed. In reality however, the hospital was just a hospital, where everyone could receive care. It wasn't a front for anything, but whoever called Adam knew how he truly felt about Willie, and that he'd be likely to believe the worst of him. There was no evidence of the hospital being a fraud, and even Anne (Stark's lover) and Jack (a member of his inner circle) knew that whoever had called Adam had been lying.
