And I love this movie. Just being honest. Not in the way that I'd interpret it, but how the majority of twitter and other mob crowds would interpret it.
I mean yeah, it's actually quite racist, homophobic, and sexist, but it's amazing that 10-15 years ago we could write this off as a joke, and write any offense off as questionable characters in the plot. If this movie was made today and SC, PR, SR, were still unknown, their careers would've died with this movie underneath a tidal wave of pc outrage.
I'm actually amazed that the suite of actors in this movie haven't been targeted to apologize for their ignorance 13 years ago.
Apologies. Maybe Satire would have been a better word. Point is comedy should be taken as its meant: To get laughs and try to get people to take things less seriously.
A parody is an alternative version of something - a side by side comedic look at a specific thing like a song, character or poem. For example a Weird Al’s song that parodies an actual song.
A spoof is similar in its mocking tone but it does so in a more generalised approach to a theme, genre etc. rather than say, one person, as a parody would be. For example Blazing Saddles is a spoof western.
A satire is a work which specifically shines a light on, often using exaggeration or humour, the shortcomings, vices etc of a person often, for example, a politician.
You're right, you can't make movies like this anymore, or classics like Animal House, Caddyshack, Blazing Saddles, etc.
People today don't understand jokes or humor. They take everything literally, are ALWAYS on the defensive, and can't laugh at stupid shit that doesn't hurt anyone. People need to cherish movies like this, because they are done, and comedy itself is on really thin ice, because most of the "offended" people out there are young college aged kids. It's awful.
Grow a spine and learn to laugh at things you wouldn't normally laugh at. It makes life a whole lot more fun! Just because their is humor in a movie about race, gender, or sexual orientation, and just because you laugh at it, doesn't make you a racist, sexist, or homophobe.
You are a racist if you legitimately hate other races. You are a sexist if you legitimately hate the other gender. You are a homophobe if you hate gay people. If that isn't the case, then you have no problems, and it's ok to laugh about things sometimes.
I’m speaking to society basically. Not anyone in particular.
My 3rd paragraph, generalizing “people today”. Haha.
I’m not outraged by anything (if you are speaking to me, you did the same thing), just disappointed in the thin skin of a large number of people anymore who can’t take simple jokes based on race, gender, or stereotypes. They are destroying comedy.
