Claudio and his motorcycle license

I was watching the first 4 episodes with my wife last night and we were both wondering what was going on with Claudio. Why did he need to have a license from the UK to drive around the world? About the only thing I could think of which would've made sense was the fact that their bikes were registered in the UK and there might be some insurance requirements regarding the license when traveling abroad.

Does anybody really know? :)

Good question, and something that was never really made very clear in the programme. Here's my guess

He already had a Swiss license. However this is not recognised in the EU (including the UK) as Switzerland is not a member state. And since the team were going to ride through various EU countries I'm guessing he would need a UK License (which is EU recognised) to not only drive on British roads, but also the roads of France, Germany, Czech Republic etc (all of whom are EU countries)
