Why End in New York?

Just wondering why they chose New York to end their journey and not actually go to the very east of the continent and end in Newfoundland, Canada? Do they ever mention their reasons? I thought it kind of odd that they didn't complete the whole length of the continent.

I think the point was that London to New York is such a common journey, but they did it in the most uncommon way possible by going east. Long way round, so to speak.
