Lima One Alpha pregnant, how?

As the title says Lima One Alpha, a woman who goes into labour whilst working in the lab, gets taken out with a wheelchair. How can she be pregnant? When there are rules of proximity in place, as Lincoln Six Echo is told by the doctor that he's been too close to Jordan Two Delta.

I don't understand how she got pregnant. The baby seemed to be for a couple, who I assume couldn't have their own children. But does this mean that Lima One Alpha was artificially inseminated as a surrogate purposely for this couple before she was awakened as a clone?

reply

That's what I understood. She cloned to be a surrogate.

reply

Uh, yeah. Probably using the husband's sperm. Actually, my husband wondered if the woman didn't wish to be pregnant to avoid the issue of 'ruining' her figure, or the 'inconvenience' of the condition. It was a rather selfish, self-serving and egotistical society after all.

reply

there are medical conditions that prevent one from having children. these conditions are not exclusive to the poor. she could have had one of those conditions and afford a clone. I mean actual surrogate mothers happen in real life, though not against their wills. I hear its good money if you can deliver a healthy baby as a surrogate.

Rules for proximity... That's all most humans need right there- I'll do it- just to break the rule...They have some human traits coming out... The bottom line? The strongest urge/ human need/ and instinct Mother Nature gave us- to Procreate. And to Get Bizzy- Lima is Latin for Oversexed Clone Freak...! Ha.

reply

Yes.Lima One was cloned specifically to be a surrogate.
If you watch a man and a woman who looks just like Lima One take the baby after Lima One has been euthanized. So it is to be implied that her soul purpose was to have a baby for the original Lima.

reply

her soul purpose was to have a baby for the original Lima.

Exactly. Most of the clones were for spare body parts, but, in this case, the Lima clone was a surrogate mother, either because her 'sponsor' couldn't have a baby for medical reasons (which is unlikely because the clone would have the same medical issues) or because she simply didn't fancy childbirth. Given that the clones were never introduced to the notion of sex, and didn't ask questions, the clone probably never wondered how she became pregnant.

reply

lol her "soul" purpose - nice unintended pun.

reply

This is what gives rise to the most moving scene in this movie (for me anyway) -- when the Lima clone has just given birth and the OB nurse is putting her in restraints. The mother is thrilled and can't wait to hold her baby and the nurse is trying not to look too sad because she knows, but doesn't want the mother to know, that she's about to die.

reply

From what I saw they took in survivors from the outside world. Perhaps they explained it away that Lima One Alpha was pregnant in the outside world

reply

What I don't understand is why did they euthanize Lima One Alpha after the baby was born. I understand that they have to euthanize the clones when they harvest organs like their heart or their Lungs because the clones can't go on living without those organs, but Lima could've been kept alive until her sponsor needed something else on/in her body. Maybe they did it because Lima would've wanted to know where her baby was.

reply

That's a good question.
They couldn't have just said her baby was on the island?
It does make the scene in the movie a lot more dramatic though.

reply

The had to because she had ostensibly been sent to The Island. If she went back to the clone ward, it would be quite disruptive. And if she went somewhere else, she'd probably have a mental breakdown over losing her baby.

reply

Did they kill her afterwards?

reply

What is most surprising and disappointing on this thread is how many dolts decided the point was to explain WHY she was pregnant rather than HOW. Thanks morons.

...then whoa, differences...
