Reasons why Gothel is pathetic in the witch dept.
I grew up watching other Rapunzel films and reading storybooks. In all of them, The Witch (they never actually named her in the stories I saw) was quite formidable with her magic compared to Disney's Gothel.
In the "Fairy Tale Theater" version of the story, the witch could freeze people in place, she could build a tower out of nowhere, she could provide riches for Rapunzel very easily, including her own pet Pegasus to ride (before the girl got locked up), she could make the door to the tower disappear, and I have a feeling she was behind the unusually fast growth of Rapunzel's hair. She also never seemed to age, suggesting she knew some powerful, long-lasting anti-aging spells/potions.
There was a cartoon version of the story where she turned the prince into a bird instead of throwing him out of the tower and blinding him. (Rapunzel still healed him with her tears and turned him back into a human at the end).
Gothel? It seems as if she has no magic at all, except for the song to get the flower (and later Rapunzel's hair) to make her young again or to heal people (and since when are healing spells the same as anti-aging spells?) And the anti-aging spell was pathetic. It only lasts for three days? Come on! I've seen better magic than that! Everything else she seems to do manually or through manipulation of others. She's terrible as far as being a witch goes. Ursula could eat her for breakfast!
