harlan has the handle bar stache in the beginning of the film, doesn't for most of it...grows the beard before he takes the little brother; the handle bar stache reappears...then gone again! eh? please no stupid responses like he shaved in between takes.
He has that when hes sitting at the fire at night...then seconds later hes on horseback riding away and even though its at night, you can see hes clearly shaven! What a stupid error!
I didn't have a problem with it disappearing after his first appearance, but how did he shave if he was homeless and obviously didn't have the equipment to do so? that was pretty dumb.

Yeah, that's something i didn't really understand in that movie. As well, the last part, during their escape in hills. Sometimes, Norton harbors a beard, after not, and the day after again...something wrong in the time scale. First i thought, is that was a mistake in the montage; i could hardly believe that, when you listen to Davidson and Norton, how hard, seriously they worked on that movie. Or is there particular point to get there ? Maybe something like Harlan's fantasy world crossing reality; how he sees himself and how he actually is. With/without, out/in. Just wanted to translate that as well through his physical aspect ? That's the best explanation i could find.
Yeah - it was from the campfire bit onward where I got confused about Ed's mo - or lack of! There's no way it could be a continuity thing - it would be cool if there was a commentary - so they could give a fancy pants explanation!
"Everything in this room is eatable. Even I'm eatable. But that’s called cannibalism."
The disappearing Beard bugged me too - probably one of the only aspects of this movie that made absolute no sense to me... but then, as I was searching for whether or not others had caught this discrepancy or not, I thought the exact same thing that you brought up. Perhaps the beard disappearing and reappearing was indicative of Harlen's delusional state of mind and the director/writer intentionally provided fractional windows into this troubled world? (I hope so; or at least some other clever justification) The movie was way too good to harbor such a blatant and careless mistake... Ooo... I got one: What if the subtle changes in Harlen's facial hair was an attempt on the part of the writer/director at influencing the audience to identify more with Harlen's mental instability? Perhaps there were more similar nuances scattered throughout the movie but were cut during editing?
Just to make note, the discrepancies I noticed were:
1.) Inconsistent Beard
2.) Lack of Logical/Truthful response from the "Film Crew" at the end when Harlen and Lanny walk on set during a take - there is no way they would have kept rolling if a strange man walked onset and definitely not when a young boy yells out a word not in the "script" (when Lanny sees his dad pull up and yells "Harlen!")
3.) The disjointed/illogical gap between Tobe being shot and the Dad looking over her in the hospital and the time in which it took for the Dad to find out Lanny was gone. It seemed as if a couple days had gone by while Tobe was in a coma and after Harlen convinced Lanny to come with him - wouldn't the Dad have called home to make sure Lanny was alright? Especially since his daughter had just been shot by some "psycho" - I'm not sure a Dad, or even Step-Dad or Foster Parent, would have left their child/ward at home completely unattended and without checking up at least once while looking over another at the hospital... It seemed as if the Dad had completely forgotten about Lanny altogether, (and Lanny must have not cared to go to the hospital even though he was obviously extremely attached to his sister). And then, as soon as Tobe wakes up and whispers, "Where's Lanny," the Dad has a sudden epiphany, instantly leaves his newly awakened daughter, and magically appears in the house only to find that his son didn't stick around and had gone off with Harlen... I have a feeling this transition/scene was much more logical in the actual screenplay but parts were cut during editing which led to this confusion...
- If not for these 3 discrepancies I would have given this movie a 10/10... Instead, I give it a 7/10.
1. the beard-- yeah that was strange 2. i thought the film crew said nothing because Harlan looked like an extra and everybody just assumed he was one. also i believe that they stopped rolling and everyone ran seconds after Lonnie yells "Harlan" 3. your exactly right, if you have the dvd watch the deleted scenes, because there is a scene that is supposed to go in between the ones which you described. it cuts back to their house and you see Lonnie and Wade's friend on the couch (as if he has been watching Lonnie while Wade has been away). Wade tells Lonnie that they found his finger prints on the gun and tells Lonnie to tell the truth. He basically accuses his son of shooting Tobe and gives Lonnie even more reason to run away with Harlan.
