6.7 is not cool
Seriously,
this film really is superb. The music, cinematography, acting, setting...man, imdb voters are carving this wrongfully.

Put into perspective i am amazed that i got so high score. Thinking about how slow it is. You must remember it isn't everyone who find cinematography important.
by the way i gave a 10 too. Absolutely loved this movie.

I loved this movie so much up until the 40 minute mark... then i just didn't like it... there was little explanation or atmosphere in the last 1.20 i have to say i felt let down by norton. i like to think he didnt ruin it... good lord i hope not...

10 means the movie delivers on acting, plot, characters, pacing, overall message, etc. Therefore it is possible for a movie to be perfect.

It really is a well acted, well written, original, unique movie. IMDB members are kinda stupid, what else can you say. I give it a 9 out of ten only because the neding was a little over the top.

I thought the film had a lot of potential, but it never really delivered. The acting was great and so was the cinematography, but the story faltered. It was an interesting character although not necessarily unique. The story just moved too slowly and inevitably went no where. 6/10.

I guess the other problem I had with the film was that it never really established a point of view. It skipped around from the daughter to Norton to the son. It never established a solid point of view.

imdb score is very often a bad way to judge a movie. at the same time, I noticed that if a movie gets a score too low (maybe less that 5) it's very likely to be a crappy one in reality. but there are so many good films that get 6-7.
sharethe brown bunny has a 4.9 and i find that film brilliant. some are just far too unorthodox to get a high average. for the part though, yes i agree.
shareDon' t take care about rating things. Make your own mind on movies. And actually, a film with middle or bad rating is the best way to me to be attracted by: "What could be so wrong to get such disfavour ?..."
sharenah. I don't watch stuff unless I expect it to be good. 90% of films aren't worth watching anyway. I preview films sometimes, 10 to 15 minutes are usually enough to know whether it's interesting.
shareWell i like to watch movies even though they aren't masterpieces but some movies i just don't want to sit through if i know it is a load of crap.
I think imdb is the best way to rate movies because it is from all across the world and because you have to give your age to vote. Then you can take a closer look and see if the people in your age group rated it higher or lower, which would give you an idea if the movies is suited for your age.
I know age isn't a judge of movies but most of the time i find it to be a good indicator.
I split the rating system into different groups.
below 5,5 not worth watching. (horror movies gets a chance if they are above 5)
5,5-6 got potential
6-6,5 worth looking into might be a good underrated picture
6,5-7 good going to watch it.
7-7,5 sublime
7,5-10 going to watch it no matter what... you can't keep me away from movies rated this high.
I live in a country where we don't get half as many movies as in the US and nine out of ten movies i can watch online before they come in the cinema.
Like the first time i ever saw anything about Down in the Valley, was at a gas station where they lend out movies. I had just bought the dvd from the UK and if wasn't more then a week after the dvd release in the UK i saw it at that gas station. The thing that bummed me out was that it was among the "bad movies" the low priced onces that noone watches.
I am going to keep using pirated movies as long as our film distribution is so bad. Though i respect copy right. go to the cinema like 80-100 times a year and ownes like 150 dvds.
Sorry for the side track... thanks for taking this look into my mind if you made it all the way through.
I didn't have a chance to empirically analyze your system for pre-judging films, but I have a hunch feeling that it's not necessarily correct. For instance, I started watching Snow Cake, rated around 7.5 in my age and gender group. The film had actors I like more or less and was a British-Canadian production, set in Canada. I had to watch that. Alright, it proved out to be mediocre. Can't say it's bad, can't say it's good. I give it a 6, which is a compromise, since I won't rate a Canadian film lower.
What country you live in?

Oh, the imdb's "may like" tab for Snow Cake has What's Eating Gilbert Grape, rated only .4 higher than the former, while WEGG is obviously much better than SC.
