A Note About Harlan (I'm watching the film right now)
I don't really know what the actual point of the film is, but on the character of Harlan....I think it's a case of a grown man needing to 'grow up' and take responsibility with his life.
We see the way he drops jobs, gets kicked out of homes, and lives in a fantasy world, as well as getting in trouble with the law....(Not too mention, sleeping with an underage girl(at least, in California, where the age of consent is under 18), Tobe, that would have had him in jail to begin with).
Wade mentions 'gumption' in the film. Harlan didn't seem to be one with gumption...(If he really wanted to show Tobe how much of a man he was, he would have 'taken care of business'....i.e. be responsible with his life).
