shareMe too. It is a great movie that leaves you for a long time thinking of it.

I loved it, too. All the characters were so realistic.
Although I don't necessarily like Wade as a person (he reminds me too much of my own mom & dad, except the guns part I suppose), I do agree that he was a very relatable and well-rounded character. I did feel bad for him throughout the film, and I think he tried hard, just wasn't capable enough emotionally or whatever to articulate well or keep his temper in check. I also think he was a bit socially awkward, hence the dates with wrong women thing (although i wasn't paying a lot of attention to that detail, so I'm not sure what we were supposed to think).
I also really, really felt for Tobe and Lonnie, because they tried to find a stronger dad-figure in Harlan, who turned out to be, like Wade, similarly emotionally stunted... Except for the fact that Harlan is actually insane, while Wade is just a little imbalanced. Which is why Harlan had to die and Wade got to live.
Don't get me wrong, I feel bad for Harlan a bit, too. He was obviously sick in the mind and needed psychiatric help, which was impossible for him due to the setting and his financial status. Poor, sick guy.
This whole film was pretty difficult to watch from the moment I realized Harlan was sick, which was around when he took Lonnie shooting. I thought that scene really kind of separated Harlan's dementedness from Wade's socially-awkward-but-well-meaning parentage. I just felt so sorry for all the characters, and none of them really won in this story. :(
Ahhh... sad, sad movie. <3
This film was beautifully crafted; excellent script - so much meaning ran through out this movie. I like that the viewer had to pay attention in order to get the most out of it. On one hand, you could just "point your finger and pull the trigger" to hit a target and on the other hand - life's complicated; if not downright mysterious; some times stuff just happens.
But, although I loved the artistic quality - I didn't "love" this movie - I guess there was just too much pain in it for me.
I loved Down in the Valley too. I have Down in the Valley on DVD. Down in the Valley is my favorite Edward Norton and Evan Rachel Wood movie. I liked Harlan and Tobe in Down in the Valley
shareIt's definitely one of a few good dramas. The cold presentation of a hopeless world of an alienated man in this movie is very powerful. I watched it years ago but I can still feel the bleak atmosphere it creates, really depressing.
sharei was terrified when he shot... at this point it gets harsh.
the dreamlike before.... just gone....
and the ending was beautiful.... "dont talk..."
damn. i find myself still thinking 'bout the end.
