There was a noise which sounded EXACTLY like a trigger being pulled back, Culkin asked him what that was and Norton said it was an animal.

He was stopped from doing whatever he had planned cause the father and them came at that moment.

I got the feeling that he was gonna pin his GF's (Evan Rachel Wood) death on her brother (Culkin) and that was the whole reason he took him with him, and it woulda worked as his prints was on the gun and he was already considered as a shooter
