Why are so many so touchy about this? To me, it was no big deal...
sharebecause his last name is an obviously jewish and strange last name. Being jewish is not a bad thing, so why does it matter if she brought it up? you sound like your ashamed of being jewish
shareI'm wondering if maybe that, combined with the mention of the Catholic mother, was a poorly written way to give him the additional line that followed, when he said something cliched about this Jewish-plus-Catholic heritage being why he "Has all kinds of guilt."
That line then being a way for we the viewers to justify how he gets sucked into all this secret keeping, blackmail acceptance, and dogged avoidance of just telling the wife before any of this got out of hand.
It's a poor excuse ("I'm a guy who can't handle all my guilty feelings") for poor decisions, and I think this line was a really cheap and cliched set-up for that.
When I think up a decent sig...I'll let you know.
I thought it was just a conversational gambit on her part to ask that question. She was kind of engaging him in conversation in a way that showed she was interested in him as a person, one step up from a fellow-passenger on a train. Then they got personal very fast - showing each other pictures of their kids.
