Trying to make sense of the whole end scene where charlie and detective church are talking in the prison. Is church trying to convict him or is he actually pleased he avenged winston? or does he even know that charlie knew that guy had killed winston?
Here is my take on it. Church says that since Charles took the makeshift knife with him to the prison, the law would consider it as premeditated murder. Then he says the law also did not consider Winston, meaning he thinks the murderer did not get what he deserved. Remember, the balistics he requested following the hotel room masacre would point out that Le Roche murdered Winston. I take all this as he knew Charles intentionally killed Le Roche, but he will not pursue it since he thinks Le Roche deserved to die because he murdered Winston.
Actually, the detective said IF Charles took the knife in with him, the law would consider it premeditated murder. He either only suspects or knows but Charles hasn't confessed to that so the detective can pretty much look the other way since he was glad that Winston's death was avenged. If he really wanted to further the investigation, he would dig further to find out the truth since he knows Charles is somehow involved.
