Severely Underrated

I avoided this film for years because it had ridicule coming from a lot of people for some reason. When I watched it recently, I discovered it must have been due to Paris Hilton being part of the cast.

Either way, this film does deserve a higher score than it has on here. A 7 would be fitting because this movie is actually next level creepy and tremendously suspenseful. The main girl is the only one who showed any real acting ability, though everyone else did passable jobs, And some of the haracters did stupid cliche things like take a ride from a stranger you don't know and think was the person behind the vehicle you smashed a headlight from.

But overall, I was highly entertained and engaged and I'm baffled by the score this movie has. If left up to me, I'd give it a 7-7.5. I enjoyed it.

I agree. I put off seeing this film for a while because it starred Paris Hilton, but actually was surprised how much I liked it. Its rating should at least be a six. 5.3 is ridiculous.

Yeah it's one of the better slashers to come out in the last decade I think

reply

Yea I saw this when it first came out and remembered very little. However I always considered it cheesy mainly because of Hilton. After re watching just now it's actually a pretty good slasher. She didn't ruin it at all. Underrated.

reply

I agree. Hilton isn't a very good actress but she wasn't as bad as I thought she would be. I thought the movie had some great suspense and the death scenes were very effective.

I always like watching this film when it comes on. I like pretty much any "house of wax" movie. And this one had the right elements: a house of wax, a pretty girl, the insane wax master, the human trapped within the sculpted wax(with the required smashing to show the skull), and of course, the melting of the waxes and house at the end.

It's great.

I saw this film when it came out on DVD because of the 1953 House of Wax connection. I knew it wasn't a remake but wanted to find out what the new story was. I ended up buying the DVD because I liked it so much. Now it's on Netflix and I just watched it again. It is very creepy, and the wax house is really cool. It definitely has the horror tropes (getting off the highway, riding in a car with stranger, camping in the middle of nowhere) but I loved Paris's line when her and the lead girl smelled the bad smell for the second time - 'Yea, let's go IN the direction of the bad smell.' The back story was also interesting.

It was much better than I expected. I even thought Paris Hilton did a good job. I mean, her character wasn't a stretch for her to play, but it was believable. The fake funeral scene was pretty cool.

In agreement with everything that is said.

HOW seems to be everybody's go-to bad movie. I've seen reviews of horror movies before that wrote stuff like; "almost as bad as House of Wax", or "plunges towards House of Wax levels of mediocrity".

I actually didn't think it was that bad. The story was enjoyable, the settings were good (espeically the house itself), the funeral scene was creepy.

I'm not a fan of Paris Hilton or any such 'celebrities', but she was fine in this. She was really only meant to be the pretty best friend who ends up running around in her underwear and dies half way through. They didn't give her anything that she could spoil. Not that her acting was bad either way.

This film wasn't meant to be some Oscar winning masterpiece. It was meant to be a fun horror film, and it was.

reply

Agree. It deserves a reassessment. Had it been more popular overall at the time its rating might've gone up a bit as a cult fave by now as Paris hasn't been quite as visible. But it wasn't really a huge hit at the time so I guess people have kind of just forgotten about it.

I agree! I liked the characters, there was a lot of character development which displayed what each person was actually like. not the atypical squealing gigglers who scream and giggle all the time. I liked the setting of the creepy town as well, looked like an authentic ghost town. I think it was well made and enjoyable as well as scary. Everything was explained well on top of it, no loose ends

'I like the way you made the movies longer. They're better that way.' Sinister
