not for adults, in my opinion

I love children's films when they can be enjoyed by adults but didn't think this one was in that category, as far as I'm concerned. I thought the children's acting was below par, Colin Firth was merely annoying, and Emma Thompson didn't act at all--she just existed behind layers of makeup. Her voice was good, however. Angela Lansbury was the one bright spot-her characterization was marvelous. I don't find food fights that go on and on that funny and I doubt that children in a somewhat upper-class secluded English household in the 1800's would have known those naughty words, so I didn't find that scene funny, either. I also agree with another poster that actually giving the children measles to teach them a lesson is not humorous. I can see kids laughing at these scenes, but there are so many much better children's movies that adults can enjoy, too

I loved it, my parents loved it, my younger brother loved it.

Ok, I'll give you the food fight and the name swap. That was obviously directly playing toward children, because it's a children's movie.

But other things aren't so kid-friendly. Such as marraige to a horrible woman to prevent losing a house. I thought that was rather hard for the especially younger kids, but hey, let them watch Shrek.

I completely disagree with you about the acting in the movie (except for your comment about Ms. Lansbury). I thought the children were excellent. And it was Thompson's role. That was how she was supposed to act.

About whether measles is a laughing matter, I'm going to throw out a quote from a completely nonrelated movie: "The extreme always makes an impression."

So the kids were sick for a day. Big deal. They didn't act like they were dying or anything. And I don't think McPhee actually gave them measles. She made them sick, but went along with what they said they had.

OK, I just the first few minutes of this but I have got to run to the store... so have it paused on the DVR. I have to say, if the story is as clever as the children eating "baby" at the beginning, I truly hope to enjoy the moving. I can't get over the one child noshing on a chicken leg with a booty on the end of it.

You know that sound Goofy makes when he falls? That's my quote.

all she did was to do them what they said they had or said they'd do, i mean didn't oen of the children say they were going to play in the kitchen all night, then they literally couldn't stop playing in the kitchen, later on one of them he thought he had the measles and couldn't get up, so nanny mcphee have them all measles and made it impossible to get up. As soon as they asked if they could get up the spell was lifted.

"sir, sir, i gotta check and see if you've soiled yourself, I'll get to you in a moment, sir!"

I am an adult and loved this movie. My girlfriend thought is was great also. We watch a lot of movies and can tell the difference in quality productions. I have seen plenty of so-called kids movies, some of which are average at best. This is one that will go down as a classic and will be watched by many adults.

Couldn't disagree with you more. My wife and I watched it last night and thoroughly enjoyed it.

If anything, this is one of the most adult friendly children's movies I can think of.

So true!

I am the movies I love! (^_^)

I agree that it's a bit cheesey to be really enjoyed by older audiences, but that's understandable, it IS a kids' move afterall.
and since I'm really not an adult, but more of a teenager, I might find it kiddy while actual adults find it cute.
and i thought the acting was ok for the most part..

you're entitled to your opinion, of course. I'm 28 years old - an adult. My parents who are 60 years old told me about the movie. I rented it on DVD and LOVED it. I watched it a few times on "HBO On Demand" (or it may have been Cinemax on Demand) while at my parents' house. I've been searching for the DVD because I want my 8 year old niece and 6 year old nephew to watch the movie. I think they'd like it.

I loved this movie and im an adult. I am also an adult who is not that easy to please. I hate most movies, but this one was very good. Could be because I love Colin Firth and Emma T. and I love period pieces as well, but still. I thought it was very entertaining.

What I really hate are movies that are aimed at kids, marketed at the "family" audience, but are totally dumbed down, and in addition to having jokes that are only funny if you're a kid, they have jokes or references that you would only get if you're an adult, or situations that are just downright inappropriate. The bulk of supposed "kids" movies are like this. But Nanny McPhee is better than that. It isn't as good as Matilda, but it's similar enough to be appreciated.

Emma Thompson is a decent writer; she knows how to create a story that kids will fully understand but that won't seem stupid or boring to adults. That's exactly what we have here. Yes, parts of the movie are a bit too silly, like the food fight, but occasionally being a bit too silly is hardly deserving of a condemnation. It's a quality story. If I didn't already know that Emma Thompson had written the script, I never would have bothered to record it off HBO, because I would have expected it to be dumbed down like all those other stupid movies. But I gave it a chance, and I liked it.

I just saw this recently. I expected it to be purely a kids' film, but I enjoyed it. I thought it was pretty funny. I'd watch it again.
