What would have happened?
When Mr Brown is talking to his wife's chair about what will happen to the children if he has to go to debtors prison he says "it'll be the workhouse for the older children. Goodness only knows what will happen to little Chrissy". Does anyone know what actually happened to young children/babies in these circumstances in Victorian times? I would have assumed they would have been adopted but he makes it sound like it would be something awful.
