Misters Jowls and Wheen...

I'm rather sure those are their names. In any case, Mr. Brown's assistants at the mourge. Anybody else get that "couple" vibe from them? They really remind me of either Firmin and Andre from Phantom of the Opera or Roger and Carmen from The Prodcuers.

And before anyone leaps down my throat thinking I'm a basher, I'm not. They're the best characters in the whole movie aside from Nanny herself. I just want to know if anyone else saw that or if I've just been reading way too much slash.

I kind of got that too, they were a little too close, but some of my fav characters from the movie. they make me laugh

i think that was mentioned in the commentary that people thought they were a couple even though they were not menat to be. i think the actors played it that way since it was such a great script!

They definately were

reply

No, I didn't get that. I just thought they added comedy by playing so closely off one another.

reply

I was sure they were going to go into a "mm, suits you sir" "suits you" routine.

Many years ago, when men were men etc. (cough cough) Dr. Watson and Sherlock could be roommates, associates and there were no innuendos about sex. Women frequently paired up for convenience and companionship and there were no innuendos about sex. Oscar Wilde was defamed, jailed and considered quite outside the pale. His sexual relations with a minor would be felonious today. When gentlemen were gainfully employed at a Dollar a day, renting a flat or a room with a roommate was frequently the only way to keep a roof over one's head. For guys in their twenties the same holds. Sex may or may not have anything to do with it.

reply

Actually, men can be close friends without being a couple.
Like Frodo and Sam from the lord of the rings. And like the above mentioned Dr. Watson and Holmes.

They blew up Congress!!! HAHAHA!

They reminded me of a more comic version of Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum. :D

reply

Actually, I thought they were brothers. Or Cousins. At, least, they reminded me of the "Cheeryble" brothers in Dickens' Nicholas Nickleby.

reply

They seemed like a couple to me. The looks they gave each other and the fact they said the same things at the same time.

The vibe you got was, I think, due to Derek Jacobi in camp mode, well maybe 1/2 strength camp mode, check him out in "Vicious." Sir Derek ( 3 times knighted) is one of THE actors of our time, this was almost a cameo role for him. I think he decided to have some fun with it and Barlow went right along. There mugging in the wedding scene was just great, two old(er) queens in the back row aghast at and critical of what's going on. The look they exchanged when they saw the dress said volumes without a word, followed by expressions that said, " He's marrying HER ?!"
