What Year Does It Take Place?

I've been looking at this film on AMC, and I'm trying to figure out just what year it takes place in.

It's supposed to be the 19th Century, but some of the children's clothing -especially in the early scenes where they're causing chaos- look distinctly like they're from the 20th Century.

Any hints or indications what year it's supposed to be? Or is it a deliberate mix-up to make it feel more timeless?

It's roughly around eighty or so years before the early 40s. There's a big clue in the second movie ; )

Haven't seen the 2nd one yet, so I don't know that reference. I do know that the colors are very Victorian feeling. Vivid colors were popular in both clothing and houses. Yes, Queen Victoria wore black mourning clothes after Prince Albert died until her death, but vivid colors were popular.

Aniline dyes were discovered in 1856 and quickly became fashionable colors. The first ones were mauve and bright purple. In 1860, two fashionable brilliant pink aniline dyes were named after battles in Italy's fight for independence: magenta, named after the Italian town of Magenta, Italy, and the similar solferino, named after Solferino. Magenta was popularized in England by the Duchess of Sutherland after she was appealed to by the Spitalfields silk weavers.

The children have a teddy bear, which was introduced in 1903. So I would say it takes place in the early 20th Century.

Just because the name Teddy originated from Roosevelt in 1902, does not mean there didn't exist stuffed animals in, let's say, 1786.

In my opinion, this movie takes place in 1880-1900. I am basing it on the costumes. Dresses in 1840-1870 were hideous.

I like to think that the first film took place in the 1840s, as it is said that the second film took place 100 years after the first film. Also, the place still looked like the 17th-18th century style English counryside, way before the Industrial-like smoggy atmosphere commonly depicted in the second half of the 19th Century.
In addition, Great Aunt Adelaide mentioned that her hat was a gift from the Duchess of Kent, presumabely Queen Victoria's mother.

Agatha was an old lady in the second movie. Most people don't live to be 100. So I am guessing she was in her seventies or 80's. Since it was the 1940's in the second film, that probably makes this film set around the 1860's or 1870's.
