When Zack announced their engagement...

Did he propose to Claire yet or was he assuming she'd accept and just announce it? She looked really confused and surprised so it threw me off.

I think he never gave her a chance to give a "yes" or "no" answer. It seemed like he rushed it to force her to marry him before she changes her mind because of John. Note that Sack (yes, that's how his name is actually spelled) got angry when he found out Claire was hanging out with John.

I think that his name was Zach, but Sack was his nickname.

I think he did ask her but she didn't expect it to come up while the guys were still there. Right before it she was saying how she is scared to get married to Wilson's character and asking if it was normal to feel that way. I think she just didn't want to tell the guys because she was starting to fall for Wilson...

Earlier in the film they state that they plan to get married some day, but they're waiting till they accomplish some of their life goals first. So it's basically assumed that they'll one day get married, they just haven't officially gotten engaged yet. She's at a point where she's no longer sure if she even wants to be with him, so she's a bit surprised that he has chosen to announce to the family that they're engaged.
