Incest

I've seen this movie so many times I don't know how I've never realized this, but wasn't Clare and Isla Fisher's character under the impression that John and Jeremy were related to them somehow? They said they were "Uncle Ned's" kids and no one was really familiar with who that was but the entire family believed them enough to let them stay at the house for the weekend. And if they were attracted to them wouldn't they think they were attracted to their second or third cousins or someone related to them through blood? Maybe that would be by marriage? I know they really weren't related but still...?

reply

they pretended to be related to the groom not the bride

remember the old man in church asks them "how are you related to the groom?"

reply

I was thinking that could have been a possibility, but wouldn't that mean they would still be related through marriage? Maybe I'm just overthinking it.

reply

Being related through marriage isn't incest.

We got the freakin' moon. What are you gonna do without tides, Peru?

reply

Well yes, but that still doesn't mean it wouldn't be frowned upon if I hooked up with my aunt who I'm related to through marriage.

reply

How do you have an aunt through marriage that isn't one of your parents siblings?

reply

There is no such thing. The only relatives you gain through marriage are in-laws.

I'm actually surprised at how many times this question has been asked. Look at it this way: If your brother gets married, and his wife has a cousin that you're attracted to, and the two of you hook up. Would that be weird? No it wouldn't because she's not YOUR cousin.

reply

Yeah I don't get why some people think this is so weird, you aren't blood related at all, which is what makes incest weird/wrong to begin with.

reply

And you can marry your cousin and that's not incest i would never marry my cousin but it is legal

reply

Depends on the state. It's not legal everywhere because there still is the risk of the baby having problems should you have kids.

My mother's brother getting married. She would be my aunt because they are married, and the only reason we would be related is because they got married.

reply

She's not related to you through blood though. If she and your uncle got a divorce, she would just be another woman.

reply

a) not related by blood, cousins of the blood relative's spouse
b) a re-marriage - say the guys are the kids of Uncle Ned's wife, when their mom married Uncle Ned - her 2nd marriage. He didn't make em, but they still call him 'Uncle Ned'.
c) many friends of the family would be called 'Uncle' even if they ain't married to the brother or sister of a parent.
