Ellie was an infant when Jo worked on a case involving Ellie's birth mother, a drug user/trafficker who is still in jail. Jo adopted Ellie when the child was made a ward of the state, saying, "She needed me - and I needed her."
(Which never actually sat well with me. Why the need to include drugs and crime in a cross-racial story? Why couldn't Jo have simply fallen for a great guy who happened to be black, and hey presto, Ellie?)

...because it happens...black, white, asian...just as realistic as the falling for a black guy scenario.
I understand you wanting a more heavenly reason she has a bi-racial kid...but the fact it does not "sit well" with you .... it is your opinion and you are entitled to it though.
and the last episode was about a WHITE middle class girl--runaway and strung out on heroin...IT HAPPENS!
