What is CBS Doing?

I just read that this season will have 18 episodes again. Why? It's not that bad of a show compared to the other failed experiments CBS has seen crash an burn. Not to mention, coming into this season, the show was just 20 episodes away from hitting the 200 mark. CBS has got to know this, and yet they go an order 18 episodes which will leave it just short of 200. Why the hell would you consider doing that. If there was a guarantee that this show would be back for next season, it wouldn't be that big of a deal. But since it's buried in a Friday time slot, all bets are off. And now CBS won't even let it 200 episodes. What was the point of renewing it then, if you weren't going to order at least 20 episodes. The other 2 CSIs have gotten to 200 episodes. Why not NY?

I gave up trying to figure out CBS a long time ago. This is a good show. I hope it gets the support it deserves.

There's something here that doesn't make sense. Let's go and poke it with a stick.-Doctor Who

Well better on a Friday than a Sunday, almost every Sunday show has failed due to football

You have to understand that things like milestones in the show, the story, the actors, etc, don't matter to the network executives.

You see a show as something to get invested in, they see it as a product with as much emotional attachment to it as you have to the roll of toilet paper in your bathroom. All the hype about how they believe in a certain show, or how they love it, are just words to them. They don't actually understand those concepts.

To them, TV shows are like fighting dogs. You throw it into the arena with other dogs and hope it kills them. If it doesn't, it's a loser, so you put it to sleep and grab another dog.

Also, network executives (and movie studio executives) are completely incapable of judging quality. They don't even know the definition of the word. To them, every cop show is completely equal to every other cop show. They're all interchangeable. They don't see unique characters, all they see are the words "Cop Drama", or "Sitcom". They don't have a clue what makes one show successful while another show flops.

The closest they can come is to credit or blame the actors for a show's success or failure. So when a show is successful, they keep trying to put those actors in other shows and can't understand it when they fail. Conversely, when a show fails, they're likely to blame the actors and not want to cast them in anything else.
