No one spoke for the first 30 mins

The first word 30 mins. in was "Speak!" by Mac

well it was like an episode of buffy - where the whole cast didn't speak for almost 30 minutes; the name of the epi was "Hush" and it was nominated for an emmy.. it was so brilliant - but joss whedon IS brilliant; this episode reminded me of it of course it didn't have the "floating skeletal gentlemen" (which were creepy as hell)taking the voices away on csi:ny---but its amazing that a show can get away w/doing these type of episodes and still come out so exceptionally GREAT! i for one loved this episode, bc the actors had to use their facial expressions for what they were feeling.. and its called GREAT acting as far as i'm concerned - just like it was for the cast on BTVS not many shows could get away w/this type of episode but CSI:NY & (whole cast) pulled it off incredibly and i adore this show so much - i'm proud how well the cast was in this episode, i love everyone of the actors on this show, but Gary Sinise aka Mac Taylor rocks my world- the actor always has been a fave of mine- he continues to amaze me in everything he's done on and off the screen. i give a bow to the whole cast, who showed just how much talent there is on THIS show. BRAVO TO THE CAST, WRITING, AND DIRECTING OF THIS EPISODE.

joss whedon is almost godlike. I loved this episode. There were parts that dragged a bit to get the full 30 minutes but other than that, I loved it.

Honestly, i don't think it dragged in any of the first 30 minutes, i thought it was well done, i was thinking the whole episode was going to have no main cast talking.

Was the first few Green Day songs that were playinh on the Duo album?, i hadn't heard some of them yet.

Buffy worked because there was also NO music...which went along with the creepy vibe.
That song playing during Adam's lab stuff started to annoy me and I was antsy and pissed and wanted them to speak. It was frustrating and stupid, and I had no idea it was planned either. Just dumb.

That's not true, Buffy had music. Lots of it. I think you're confused with the episode The Body, that one had no music, but the characters talked like they normally would.

You're right.
I was.
Still--somehow it worked. CSI just irritated me for some reason...

I think it's because with Buffy they had a reason to be quiet. Their voices were really gone and they did hand gestures while talking to each other and weird fun stuff but with this it was just random quietness and they just kept quiet, they didn't really DO anything.

I really didn't like this episode, I felt this was just a huge shameless promotion thing for Green Day.

reply

Yeah, I bet it was a big promotion for 'Green Day'. I didn't like the first half either.

I really enjoyed it. I don't think many shows could pull off something like this. It just showcases how great both the cast and crew are!! I hope this shows TPTB that this show deserves to be renewed because I really don't think in today's line-up of shows more than one or two could have pulled this off. That's including CSI:NY. I thought it was going to be horrible and I wasn't looking forward to it. I was very pleasantly surprised to find out that I really enjoyed it.

Also did they use Green Day songs that have already been released or some off of a new CD or did they team up with Green Day and have them write songs for this episode? I'm not a huge fan of them, but I do know some of their hits and I was thinking that some of the scenes fit better with songs that I knew than the ones that they showed that I had never heard. For example I was thinking that Boulevard Of Broken Dreams could have fit well with the scenes where Flack was trying to save the little girl and his phone couldn't get a signal and he was there alone with her, or even when Lindsay was searching for her daughter and she was all alone, more so than the ones they chose to use in this episode. Also I wonder if they were limited with songs that they could use due to licensing issues when it comes to releasing this season on DVD. I got this off of the Cold Case IMDB page "Cold Case is being stalled on its release on DVD because of copyright issues having to do with the music in the show. It will cost millions of dollars in royalties that would have to be paid to the record companies and the artists for use of their songs on the DVDs."

Finally, cheluzal do you think that if a different song was played even other songs by other groups that you would have liked it better then? I think that it was weird only having Green Day songs playing and it seemed like as I said before that the songs and the "storyline" didn't always work well or go together as well as it could have if different songs were played. That being said, I think that the actors and directors of this episode were great because they really provided the storyline through their facial expressions so that the music not matching wasn't as big of deal as it could have been if the acting wasn't so great.

As an avid CSI:NY fan, I thoroughly enjoyed this episode. I thought it was very well executed. Not many shows could get away with no speaking for the first half of an episode. I was pleased to see CBS and the creators do something new for a change. As for the Green Day songs played during this episode, it stated at the end that all of the songs used were from their NEW albums coming out titled "Uno". "Dos", "Tre"....I am not sure if they have been release yet. I do know that one of the songs "The Forgotten", which was used in this episode, was written for the new Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 2 movie and the video for it uses scenes from the soon to be released film.

hrouse80 Your right they did tell us that. I posted when they started speaking so I hadn't seen that part yet. I agree that not many could get away with this and that it was great for CBS and the creators did something new and even risky this season. It shows just how great the show, producers, actors, and crew are that they made it so great that it fit in with the same great quality you see in the episodes where they talk all the way through the episode. This might not be my all time favorite episode but I do think that it will forever go down as the best acted one and one of the favorites. Which is something I totally did not expect at all!

i think the reason it didn't work (at least for me) but the great buffy ep did was because they had reason to be mute. but on csi, it felt very unnatural for them not saying a word. there were lots of scenes where they would normally talk.

i hated it and yeah, felt like it was just a big promo ep for green day, which is very lame.
