I haven't watched the older ones in quite sometime, now being on Netflix, I'm researching them and thoroughly enjoying it. I'm up to season 4, and so far it's my favorite with the 333 caller, and Danny with the little boy getting shot. The show was taking off and the characters more seasoned.

My favorite seasons are 5 and 6, I choose both because I love both seasons equally.
I love seasons 5 and 6 the most for several reasons, I think in terms of storylines 5 and 6 were the most solid; the characters are the most fleshed out and developed more. Firstly with Danny & Lindsay's relationship evolving further and with the birth of their daughter and becoming parents, their characters were able to grow and mature together as well as individually. I'm also a big Danny+Lindsay shipper, so I'm really happy with the development & growth of their relationship Danny's character also underwent even more growth when he became paralyzed in the beginning of season 6, and it was nice to see him overcome that obstacle with the emotional support of Lindsay. And then the couple had to deal with Shane Casey, which was yet another obstacle the couple had to face and overcome, but with all the love and support for each other, I feel the Messer family can overcome any hardship together.
Danny and Lindsay were not the only characters who were more fleshed out in season 5 and 6, Stella was also finally able to learn the truth about her professor whom she admired so much since she was young, she also learned the truth about her mother, so we get to see more of Stella's backstory and development in season 5, we got to see her trust issues being challenged.
There's also Flack who finally develops a romantic relationship with Jessica Angell in season 5, it was nice to see him fall in love with Jessica and be happy, and then see him go through the grieving process after her death in season 6, seeing him go through that traumatic time in his life really helped with his character's growth.
We also got to see more of Hawkes' character development in season 6; seeing him make mistakes and dealing with it, and then losing his apartment, he had his own problems & obstacles that he had to overcome in that season.
So quite alot of things happened in seasons 5 and 6 in terms of character development, I think the writing in both seasons in general are great and very solid for the characters, IMO both seasons are the best. Of course I enjoy all 9 seasons to various degrees, but seasons 5 and 6 are definitely my favorites
