Do shows like this encourage crime or defeat crime?

I enjoy watching crime shows. They seem to dominate the TV airways. Law and order is the main theme of all these crime programs, but who watches them? With the recent surge in violent shootings in Fergerson, New York and Baltimore and the mass shootings in several colleges and universities, there appears to be a link between crime TV and actual crimes in our communities. Going by the "copycat" theory that people commit crimes because they saw someone else commit a crime, leads me to believe that crime on TV is being copied by "wanabe" criminals. There also appears to be a "rule-of-three" where a major crime is followed closely by two more crimes.

I looked up index (violent) crime in America using FBI data a few months ago. As I recall, over the past 20 years or so, violent crime is down. Of course, in our short-attention "look at me" 24 hour news cycle society, the perception is that there is more crime because it is so quickly and widely reported.

I don't think any TV shows have any effect upon someone that chooses to commit a serious crime.

I read in the newspaper that crime shows are all the rage in prisons! You'd think they leave that stuff alone! LOL!!
