Neo-noir?

Reminded me of those great classic mystery thrillers (Phillip Marlowe, Sam Spade type of film)

Was this intended to be neo-noir?

Half Irish, Half German - hated by all. But at least I'm not Welsh

Yes. The dialogue is modeled on hard-boiled detective fiction of the '30s and '40s, the plot is clearly that of a detective story, but set in a high school, and the scene with Brendan and the principal is highly reminiscent of the scene between Sam Spade and the district attorney in The Maltese Falcon.

These and other things--e.g., the "femme fatale" character, Laura--clearly point to the noir roots of the film. Plus, I believe the director has specifically stated that film noir was the inspiration.

great point. I consider it a sort of neo and classic noir hybrid. I think it works well, personally. It engaged me!
