Is it okay to neither love nor hate this movie?
I don't get it.
I thought it was a pretty good movie. I give it a 7. But (well not unlike many boards) this board is ridiculous and polarized.
First, okay, I get that Michael Bay sucks, but just because you don't like this movie doesn't mean you're a die hard Transformers fan or Twilight fan. But seriously, the fact that teenagers don't act like that is what drives people nuts? You ever see Children Of The Corn? I hate that movie because children don't act like that. You ever see 1984? I hate that movie because the government isn't actually like that (yet). You ever see Talladega nights? I hate that movie because Nascar drivers don't actually act like that.
I'll stop but you have to get the point that those movies are much more grounded in reality than giant space robots or vampires, yet they are still somewhat fantasy. At what point does a movie become too realistic to still have fictional elements in it, even though it remains fiction? I don't get it.
That being said, enough about the posters and onto the movie. It's a mystery for christ's sake. If they came out and told you what happened at the beginning, the movie would be over. That's the whole point, to draw out the mystery and slowly reveal clues. Maybe people aren't familiar with the real Sherlock Holmes but rather the one who runs around while crap blows up around him, I don't know. As far as the plot and pacing goes though, I thought it was spot on. Even if the plot may have dragged on from time to time, the dialogue made up for it. Also there was some nifty camera tricks and other visual stimuli to keep the viewer entertained as well.
I didn't particularly care for any of the characters however. The Pin was awesome simply for his minivan with the lamp in it scene, I had to pause the movie so I wouldn't miss anything while laughing at that absurdity. Actually his entire character was pretty awesome. In the end though, I wasn't concerned with his fate nor any other character's. I liked the plot and how it played out, but if the characters had been replaced by any other characters it would have made no difference to me, and so that's mainly where my 7/10 rating comes from.
I also thought this was JGL's weakest performance I have seen so far. I can't absolutely blame him though, it seems it was just the way the character was written. After loving him in Manic and Hesher though I think I had my hopes for him a little high. I also really liked him in Inception, 500 Days Of Summer, and Uncertainty. About to check him out in Mysterious Skin tonight, I have high hopes for that as well. But I have began to ramble.
So in summation, if this is the worst movie you've ever seen go check out the IMDB bottom 100 and watch any movie on that list, then come back and take back what you said or shut the hell up. The "you just don't get it, go watch Transformers" crowd, also shut the hell up. Your condescending attitude feeds into the negative image of the indie film crowd, and feeds the wankers who feel the need to call any artsy movie pretentious. And if you use that word to describe this movie or any that are similar, you can go eat a bag of vacuum lint as well. Sports are pretentious, politics are pretentious, art is art. Hell, ironically most Hollywood films are pretentious if you care to actually look up the definition of the word. Anywho, Brick wasn't a classic but it's definitely worth a watch, most likely 2.
