The drive-by cigarette toss during the payphone conversation...

**Edit: This question has been answered further into the thread; thanks**

I've only watched it once, so I'm probably missing something.

In what way was that scene -- in which Tug's car speeds past Brandon's payphone conversation with Laura, and in which the cigarette was tossed -- any kind of clue toward Emily's disappearance?

Any car could have driven by at that time, whether it was related to the movie's plot or not, no? What made it significant that it was Tug's car and Laura's brand of cigarette?

.

Emily was scared when she saw it

Thanks! That gets me a little closer to understanding.

I take it Emily was in close proximity to the same payphone that Brandon answered? Where was she?

reply

during the phone conversation, Emily says "its good to see you again." Brandon immediately looks out to try and find her, but he doesn't.

Brandon and Laura also refer back to this scene during the big scene at the football field at the end. Watch that again. It will explain a lot.

That's the part I must have missed. And that's the thread that ties it all together. Thanks. No need to rewatch anything now.

brendan explains at end when he is accusing laura of setting emily up.

Swing away, Merrill....Merrill, swing away...

Not sure if i'll get a reply, but why does Laura drive the car but the cig drops from the passenger? If that's the case it seems like he shouldn't have been able to pin it on her... or they just screwed up the explanation... or something

That just seems like an odd conceit to me.

reply

That's just a goof. Shame.

reply

Not a goof! Rewatch the scene.

Not a goof! At the end when Brendan is telling Laura what happened, he says it was Tug's car, with Pin in the back seat and her riding shotgun (because that's the only way Emily could have seen someone in the car).

reply

I'm pretty sure it's said at the end Pin was driving shotgun and Laura was the driver, because Emily was on the other side of the road.

reply

So previous question not answered. If Laura is driving, why does her cigarette
come out of the passenger side?

reply

goof, only way to explan it

reply

Emily was able to see the driver from her side and was terrified when she saw who the driver was.

Thank you for wanting to help answer the question. I'm curious though. Did you see the other thirteen replies in this thread?

I read the first one, and then I replied. I kind of guessed it was already answered but just wanted to make sure haha :P

I'm rewatching the film now and haven't gotten to the ending so some of this is from memory.

Brendan notices the car because Emily freaks out when it comes by. He's talking to her and hears her freak and out and end the call. Then he sees the car drive by.

The cigarette ends up being a clue that Laura was in the car.

"Unless Alpert's covered in bacon grease, I don't think Hugo can track anything."

As others have already stated, Emily panicked when she saw Tug's car coming and she hung up on Brendan. Thus, he knew to watch out for the black mustang from that point forth.

Also, I'm pretty sure what was being smoked by The Pin's clients/clique was not tobacco cigarettes. I don't think it was weed either. If you notice, the one tossed from the mustang was rolled like a joint and it had a blue arrow on it - what Brendan noted when he saw Laura's later on. It was another odd piece of the puzzle that stood out to him.

Also, when is it ever stated that Laura is the only one who smokes those cigarettes? It's just a clue that she's involved in their crew.
