Is Brendan supposed to be unlikeable?
I realize he's supposed to be the hard as nails detective of the story, but he just came off as a moody misanthropic loner.

Any good titles you suggest I check out before rewatching Brick?
shareThe Maltese Falcon [1941] with Humphrey Bogart--you'll see the inspiration for Brendan's meeting with the principal.
Out of the Past [1947], one of Robert Mitchum's best.
Murder, My Sweet [1944] with a surprisingly effective Dick Powell.
For something a little more recent: Chinatown [1974] with Jack Nicholson, arguably the best of the neo-noirs.
