Why was Brendan sick?

For the second half of the movie we saw Brendan becoming increasingly physically weak. Was there a reason for this?

I'm just going to guess extreme exhaustion and emotional stress, due to not sleeping, chasing people down, and his ex-girlfriend dying.

"I wanted to buy a candle-holder but the store didn't have one. So I got a cake."

There's all that, but Laura said he had swallowed a lot of blood (having had the stuffing kicked out of him twice in a very short period of time) which also heavily contributed to it.

I also suspect it was added as a diversionary red herring. First time I saw it, I figured he had been poisoned with some bad brick.

Yeah, physical exhaustion and the cold climate. Most nights, it seems, he stays up, so he gets very little sleep, and then during the day he gets his ass kicked.

He takes several pretty serious beatings over the course of the film most notably from Tug and Brad Bramish. He's also operating on little or no sleep over the course of several days

That is what I thought too

I was gonna say. Internal bleeding, probably. And such.

This is not something that is even close to being directly pointed to in the movie, but I started to wonder if maybe he was also a heroin user and he was starting to go through withdrawal symptoms.

Just a theory.

i had thought the exact same thing, but saw nothing to support it that i could lay my finger on.

The beatings were indeed taking their toll on Brendan, he was suffering from internal bleeding as well.

Internal bleeding

I thought he was poisioned with that orange juice he had at the pin's place

Its the repeated beatings he takes.
I thought it was very obvious, and well felt throughout the film.
It felt like he was carrying the world on his shoulders.
