the movie is a bad joke. the 7.5 rating has to be from tweens. it is like they took a decent noir mystery and dropped in the highschool kids which ruined the movie. nobody was believable due to the atmosphere so it turned out like a big bad joke. been a long while since I could say I actually wasted my time finishing a movie.
At first I felt the same, but then I realised it was deliberate. It's kind of like the Romeo and Juliet movie with Leonardo DiCaprio in, in that respect. Once I got used to the style, I really, really like it. I didn't realise the movie would be so divisive.

It's suppose to simulate a crime-noir novella.....which unfortunately includes "Dick Tracey talk". This movie, in my opinion, is horrible. I love Joseph Gordon Levitt and am stoked he has hit the mainstream, but this movie sucks. It tries too hard...doesn't engage the viewer...and it rather exhausting to watch.
If you want to watch a good crime-noir novella...watch Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (if you haven't already seen it). It's similar, but with funny dark humor, twists, etc. Also, In Bruges is good as well. Don't be thrown that Colin Farrel is in it..he actually is what makes the film so to speak.
That's funny you said that because I generally avoid anything with Farrel in it. I don't hate him or anything, just something about him is really off putting.
i hope you choke on your bacardi & coke! *Team Landa*
The problem with this movie is the script and the cinematography.
All the hip dick dialog (high schoolers don't talk like that). I know what he was going for, but you can't understand it half the time, and everything is super dark so you can't see faces very well half the time, add a convoluted script and it just becomes very hard to follow.
Just my 0.02
I knew that whenever I got there he'd be there. Then I woke up.
I enjoyed the hard-boiled dialogue, and I had no trouble following the story. It's not supposed to be "realistic," although, on the other hand, everything that happened could have, and does, happen with high school students.
In a way, it's like a musical--in real life people don't burst into song as part of a conversation or to voice their thoughts to themselves. But, criticism of musicals on the basis of lack of realism is fairly idiotic. You're free to like them or not, but to point out their lack of realism as a critique is like criticizing a steak because it's not a good dessert.
So also with Brick. It's not supposed to be realistic. It's a highly stylized film, using the speech and conventions of film noir to tell a story about crime in a high school.
I didn't catch on until about 30 minutes in. This film is a hybrid. It's old school noir draped in a modern setting. You have to accept that to enjoy the movie.
"Cool will get ya dead." -Former NBA Power Forward, Karl Malone
Yeah, I was the same! I reckon some people never get around to accepting that and thus don't enjoy the film. Still others might not enjoy it for other reasons. I just wish people could respect dissenting opinions and engage in mature discourse without mentioning car chases and explosions etc.
I can accept it, and I still don't enjoy this movie. The first 30 minutes were fun, then it went downhill fast for me. The story had a great setup but nothing past the first hour kept me interested or emotionally invested.
