Did anyone else think this was 'The Maltese Falcon Goes to High School'?

At the end, I half expected Brendan to say to Laura on the football field, "I hope they don't hang you, precious, by that sweet neck. Yes, angel, I'm gonna send you over."

She was even wearing her coat draped over her shoulders, arms out, the way Mary Astor does at the end of The Maltese Falcon.

The Pin = Sidney Greenstreet as Gutman, "The Fat Man" (they both get epithets rather than names).

Dode = Peter Lorre's Joel Cairo, ambiguous sexuality and all.

Tug = Elisha Cook Jr. as Wilmer; just dumb muscle.

Which means that Emily = Miles Archer, the difference being that Miles is not a love interest.

Or is he?

Actually it's "Red Harvest Goes to High School and ..."

Yes, it does have elements of Red Harvest [Hammett's best, in my opinion], but the scene in the principal's office is clearly modeled on Spade's encounter with the D.A.
