Cigarette Smoker at Party

At the party there are two moments where someone lights a match(I assume to smoke) behind Brendan. First when he's sitting on the stairs, and then in the yard when he runs to follow Laura. At first I thought the cigarette reveal meant it was Laura, but she was in plain view both times so it couldn't be. Was there no point to this?

I noticed that too. He had found a cigarette in an ashtray (can't remember the context..my first time watching the film) and it appears that Laura has the same brand; this is the place where Brendan knows that it was she who was present during a significant event. I'll have to watch it again to see where the first cig was found.
