People should watch some anime...

I can't help feeling that if people just watched a little anime, like Steins Gate ... or obviously Cowboy Bebop... for example, and some other noir or neo-noir films before they watched this film, they would have enjoyed it immensely for the satire it was. I never understood this call for films to be realistic unless realism is what the film want ed to convey -- for instance, The Bourne Identity tried to reposition the spy genre through a more realistic lens, for which it did very well. However, I thought that the seriousness of these characters really emphasised the gravity of how 'American' high school politics seemed to work, at least how serious it is to them.

Whatever the case, realism is boring. I don't think we should judge this particular film with that criteria.

This is not a satire. It is a noir set at a modern high school. The movie is obviously aware of this unusual set up, however, and uses it to comedic effect a few times. However, I agree with you 100% otherwise. The director cited Cowboy Bebop as a direct influence on the movie.
