Was this a twist? (spoiler)

In the final scene, as Laura is walking away, the Brain appears out of nowhere from the angle of Brendan's head and they have a conversation. Could this possibly mean that the Brain was in fact Brendan's brain, and the whole time he was talking to himself? If that's true I think that's just genius storytelling. Either way, I loved this move a lot! 9/10

That's actually a very interesting thought. I think you could have a case.

Though didn't Brain drive Brendan somewhere in his mom's car at one point? Hmm..

Although I don't remember the scene with Brian driving Brendan somewhere, the only scene which makes me doubt this theory is the scene where Brain tells Brendan that he told Emily his locker number; although this may also be Brendan forgetting that he gave Emily his locker number or something. I would love to somehow find out if this theory is true or not aha.

Maybe I'll watch the movie again tonight and see if things add up..

Have you ever heard the theory that Ferris Bueller wasn't real?

It's been suggested and debated in the past -- feel free to spelunk the discussion archives, you might find some threads still.

Personally, I never bought it. Em didn't even know where Brendan's locker was until she asked Brain at the very beginning, so that right there points toward him being real.

Besides: hard-boiled detective noir has a long-toothed tradition of having some character be a street-savvy info dump for info the main character couldn't find out on his own, and Brain fits that niche perfectly.

I just composed a new thread asking this very thing, then decided to look before hitting send. Good thing I did, as it's apparently been brought up before this as well.

I also see responses that perhaps The Brain did a little too much other stuff to have been a figment of Brandan's brain, but still, I think there's something there.

I'm leaving it open in my mind until next viewing.

I was wondering the same thing myself. At the end, you see the Brain come in behind Brendan, but you don't see him leave. Definitely a genius way to foreshadow and provide information and clues as to the characters and story line.

I actually noticed this big time the other day, but I think it's just a cinematic approach to the scene. I remember thinking "I hope they don't show Brain show up on the other side of Brendan's head and exit the scene, it would be an ugly movement in the frame." And they avoided it.

As for the theory, while it could kind of fit (Brendan is a total loner) Brain provided Brendan with way too much info. Brain was basically in a whole different movie centered around intel and other forms of support for Brendan. Brendan could not be doing everything alone.

For example, Brain told Brendan that Laura never left Tug's and went straight to school. That's why Brendan knew the drugs were probably in her locker. His plan would have failed if she'd done anything else. So, either Brain is real, or Brendan left the shoot out, immediately got back to Tug's and started tailing Laura.

Brain is simply the Eyes and Ears archetype you see in a lot of noir.

I posted a theory like this years ago and all the replies were insults. Brick was on HBO recently which brought me back to this board and I can say I am pleasantly surprised. My theory about the brain boils down to three things: Brendan specifically tells the brain to not meet him in public (so he isn't seen talking to himself), brain is never seen interacting with anyone other than Brendan, and the fact that the brain literally steps out of Brendan's head in the last scene (y'know, the place brains hang out).
