S03 E04 'Gone' (Pt 1) unexplained magic or lazy writing?

Season 3 Episode 4 Gone (Part 1)

Ok, the kids are getting kidnapped and Tom and Diana are trying to figure what the meaning of the circle is that was referenced by Tyler Downing. They are standing around the light table racking their brains as to what the circle is, everything from street names to reservoirs and a prayer circle that meets at some park. But nothing makes sense. Then out of the blue, Marco brings Diana a cup of coffee, and she happens to set it down on the map that they are looking at. When she picks it up, the mug has left a circular stain. And then it dawns on her that this stain arbitrarily left on the map IS the circle that the kids were talking about, and immediately the black SUVs take off for that circle. Did something get left on the editing room floor that attempted to explain how she was able to put the cup down in the exact spot on the map. Or did this show just jump the shark?

Huh I have seen this question so many times I really wonder if I am too gullible to believe the writers meant what they said.

It was not that Diana was able to to put the cup on the right place - that was never to be questioned. It was that she then realized which circle Maia meant.

See Maia didn't say it was a reservoir or a prayer circle she just said a circle. Yes it is convenient that Diana put the cup there, but it was not what determined where the kids were - Maia already "knew" that (Diana would put the cup there) there will be a circle in which she would be located so she wrote it down. The circle of coffee already existed in the future and Maia saw it - it was a fact that couldn't have changed. Diana trusted Maia's predictions and as they had no other options left they went to check it out. For the record the kids were not there so they didn't even know they were correct...

It was just a little too convenient, and jumping to the right conclusion. So Maia knew where the circle was going to be so made sure she was inside it.

Maia just knows what will be - she doesn't make sure that she will be in the future. She knows she will be in a house and she knows that the circle will happen so she states so. By the time this episode happened Diana knew to trust Maia's predictions so she went with gut feeling.
