Did Maggie have the same mental health issues as their mother?

This seemed to be implied but not explored or dealt with.

You think they all would have learned from their mistakes the first time and gotten her some help?

I don't think she had any kind of mental illness.
There is a limit any person can bear, before they crack :p

reply

No I don't think so.

Her mother had depression or bi polar (or both).

I think Maggie is just screwed-up, no self-respect, no confidence in herself, an alcoholic and a thief.

From everything that is said in the movie it sounds like their mother had Bipolar Disorder (casually referred to as "Manic-Depressive). Maggie definitely did not have manic episodes then major depressive episodes - she had low self esteem, likely stemming from the implied academic difficulties, and learned to validate herself only through the attention of men.

I love how they showed she was capable of growth once she was removed from that environment. The first real male she had a bond with is blind and calls her "smart." You can see her confidence and mood soar after that.

Good flick.

No. The mother (Caroline) was a manic depressive bipolar but the only thing wrong with Maggie was she was a dyslexic with low self esteem which she covered up by behaving promiscuously
