Why not have Mia play both roles?

Hillary Swank and Mia Kirshner look absolutely nothing alike. And considering how much they harp on about it in the movie, why didn't they give Mia a different hairstyle, different makeup, and have her speak with a different syntax? Barring that, at least get two people who are practically doppelgängers.

That would've been the best route to take for sure. Kirshner may not have two Oscars on her mantel, but she is a superior actress to Swank and the doppelgänger angle would be much more viscerally believable if, you know, Elizabeth and Madeleine actually did resemble each other. And Kirshner had played seductive noir vixens before to great success.

At one point in the movie I thought that the blonde girl who did lesbian scenes with Elizabeth Short was supposed to be the doppelgänger of Hillary Swank. The blonde girl was played by Jemima Rooper. But still, the plot of the movie suggests that Mia Kirshner (Elizabeth Short) was supposed to be Hillary Swank's lookalike.
