Why did they imply that Jews were dirty?

I found the scene about the Q-Tips and cleaning ones ears very offensive and the movie implied that Jews aren't taught to wash or clean their ears properly.

It was a derogatory dig at Jews in general.

Technically you aren't supposed to use Q-tips in your ears just as it was stated in the movie, you can damage your ear drums because of it. I think you're reading way too much into it. I didn't get any anti-Semitic vibe from it at all. If anything, it went the other way since the family wasn't happy that the son was with a gentile, but even that is stretching it.

I think schmoopy is being facetious, ctina.

I think that schmoopy's skin is too thin and is perpetually offended by everything.

They were Jewish and it did not portray Jews in a negative way whatsoever. If anything you could argue that the film presented an overbearing mother that wanted to keep religion alive in the family. That fits the stereotype.

reply

That can be said with just about any religion or denomination too.

I did take it as an ethnic thing....but an overprotective Mom. And the warning is to NOT enter the ear canal with them.....but EVERYONE does.

I didn't take it as any kind of insult to Jewish people. I took it as a mom who knew her medicine and was being very solicitous of her loved ones.

And speaking to some later comments, I didn't even take Lisa as being overbearing. Egad, she continued to try to stick with her patient even though she was hearing intimate details about her son. This was funny as it was kind of a role reversal; usually we're up to here when we accidentally hear intimate details of a parent's romantic life.

I thought Lisa tried to be remarkably understanding and hands-off in her son's life. Although I was a bit quizzical when she first started talking to her son about his new relationship and seemed so worried when she thought the girl was only four years older. What did she want, Miss America? But she seemed to roll with the punches and adjust her emotions very well. It was also funny that she kept swigging drinks when first counseling Rafi after realizing Rafi's new beau was her son. After all, it was just water.

OP: That's not what they were implying..... One person or their family DOESN'T speak for an entire population.
